Week 5 SA: Intercultural Awareness

Week 5 SA: Intercultural Awareness No unread replies. No replies.

Cultural Awareness is the foundation of communication and it involves the ability of standing back from ourselves and becoming aware of our cultural values, beliefs and perceptions. Why do we do things in that way? How do we see the world? Why do we react in that particular way?

Cultural awareness becomes central when we have to interact with people from other cultures. People see, interpret and evaluate things in a different ways. What is considered an appropriate behavior in one culture is frequently inappropriate in another one. Misunderstandings arise when I use my meanings to make sense of your reality.

You are to develop and deliver a speech of between 4 and 5 minutes in which you discuss your anticipated efforts in becoming a more open communicator and your approach to overcoming communication barriers with co-cultures. This speech should be persuasive and include persuasive talking points regarding how you and the audience should overcome boundaries to better your cultural communication. You will have a 30-second grace period and will not lose points for speeches that are no more than 30 seconds over the approved time limit. Speeches that are more than 30 seconds over will be subject to a deduction in points from the final grade (-3 points for every 15 seconds after the allotted grace period).

To complete this assignment, record your video directly to Canvas or post a link to an active YouTube video. Be sure to do this early enough for others to view and critique your speech.
